Lanamere Arabians EI experience.

Lanamere Stud Principal Caroline Fitzgerald writes:

"We have 26 out of 26 with it.....yeah. It used to be an exclusive club but by the time we got it ( last Thursday ) everyone seems to have it , around here anyway. Its far more widespread than is publicised with the Brisbane and Minden "clusters" about to join.

Our horses are not really sick. The first to have symptoms were the 4 pregnant mares , so I am worried about them , they are now on antibiotics as they got snotty noses and I don't want that to progress to anything serious. One is 26 yrs old and another has had placentitis twice before. But everyone else has a cough and just a bit of discharge. No one is off there feed or looking too unhappy. Almost all of them have had a few days of temps , but nothing that can't be controlled by some bute.

Our suggestions.....take temps am and pm. If over 37.5 in am then give bute. Use the oral bute paste not powder in the feed so you know they've had it. If over 38.5 in pm do the same. Keep records of temps and cough , discharge etc.

Antibiotic powder in feed if discharge turns to snot, although this is when it gets really expensive, especially with large numbers of horses.

We now have to find an extra 3 hours in the day to do all this , so as you can imagine we are getting pretty tired of it. We are now day 9. All feeling the stress , even Tim (4) and Jessica (nearly 2) who don't understand why we always have to go down to the horses. We get up early to try to get it done before the kids wake.

Isla is due in less than 4 weeks with the other three due in Nov and Dec.
We have a big meeting tomorrow , organised by Peter and Penny , to hopefully start to sort out this whole EI mess , as related to the non racing horse industry......

If its 19 km away....it'll get to you! I thought we'd be safe....NOT."
