Well we didn't go into the meeting today. Still haven't got EI here as far as we know and didn't want to risk our day old foal etc. It's getting so dry again though, a thunder cloud rolled on by,I think we got three spits. Apparently the meeting was well attended in at the Showgrounds. Looking forward to someone writing a really concise and informative summary - which I can post here!
Performed a post foaling check on Touchwood. He looks bright, is drinking well, bounding about the paddock. All bits present and accounted for, good omm colour, a couple of areas of the lateral sclera "bruised" (haemorrhagic), good jaw occlusion, no problems with palate, good heart/respiratory sounds, urinating and passed meconium, all good. Temp 38.9, performed IgG Snap test on whole blood (EDTA) and looks to be approx 600 mg/dl - which is good but not as brilliant as Tapestry. (Tapestry's was 800 mg/dl a week ago).
"It is generally accepted that blood levels below 200 mg of IgG per deciliter constitute a complete failure of passive transfer. Foals having 200-400 mg/dl are considered to be in partial failure of passive transfer. Adequate levels of IgG range from 400-800 mg/dl. A level of 400 mg/dl is usually adequate for a foal which has had a normal birth, is generally in good health, and is kept in a relatively clean environment."
